Face masks have become an everyday essential, thanks to COVID-19, also known as the Coronavirus. And while there was some initial confusion during the early months of the pandemic regarding whether or not masks worked better than standard social distancing, it’s now certain that a mask (especially combined with said social distancing) will certainly help in preventing the spread of the virus. With that said, not all masks are created equal. Not only do you need to know which ones to wear, but you also should follow proper mask protocols as outlined by the CDC in order to keep yourself safe and decrease your risk of viral contraction. Want the 411 on mask safety? Here’s a quick primer on types of masks and additional directions that will keep you safe.
Cloth or Paper Masks
The main type of masks chosen by individuals, both cloth and paper, are easy to find or make. There are plenty of patterns on the internet, leading to a rise of colorful printed cloth masks, usually made of cotton or a lightweight fabric blend. Since these masks are washable, it makes sense to have several of them available at all times. Paper masks, on the other hand, are disposable, and must be purchased. Thankfully, they are fairly inexpensive. While both types of masks offer the wearer some protection against breathing in the virus, they primarily serve to prevent the spread of the droplets that the virus is typically carried in, as both materials help keep respiratory droplets contained.
Surgical Masks
Used during surgeries in hospitals, hence the name, a surgical mask is a disposable option that’s designed to loosely cover the face. These masks have a few extra layers that standard paper masks don’t have, giving you some additional protection. Finding these masks outside of a hospital can prove a bit tricky, but if you can get your hands on some, they are a good, protective option. Like the other types of masks, surgical masks help to keep some of the germs away from your nose and mouth and prevent you from spreading any respiratory droplets.
N95 Respirator Masks
Like we said, not all masks are created equal. Posing as one of the best masks available, an N95 respirator mask is another medical specialty that can be tough to find on the open market. These masks provide a high level of protection for both the wearer and those around them. When COVID-19 first emerged, these masks were described as the gold standard for a reason – they provide optimum protection and truly keep you safe. It’s important to note that N95 masks with front valves on them are not as effective in containing respiratory droplets, at they allow these droplets to escape via the port.
Choosing the Best Mask for You
Since clearly, there are several types of masks available, a few of which are harder to come by, you do have a choice when heading out to the store or jumping on Amazon to order your mask wear. The type of mask you choose is entirely up to you and should depend on your overall health and the circumstances in which you’ll be wearing them. That is, if you already have health concerns or pre-existing conditions but can’t avoid heading out to purchase groceries or other necessities, then an N95 mask would be a better option for you over a standard cloth face covering.
Proper Mask Protocol
No matter which type of mask you choose, you need to make sure that you’re wearing it correctly (it should cover both your nose and mouth) and treating is properly. Although you may be tempted to whip the mask off of your face dramatically after walking out of the store, it’s best to hold off on this until you get to your vehicle. Then, slowly remove the mask one ear piece at a time, taking care not to touch the main part of the mask. If you do accidentally touch it, wash your hands right away to remove any potential germs and wash it or dispose of it.
Wearing a mask when venturing out is an everyday part of the “new normal.” So, simply be proactive and prudent with your mask choices to stay safe and healthy.
